The Chemistry and Philosophy of Passion

As per Wikipedia, Passion (from the Ancient Greek verb paskho means to suffer or to endure) is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something.
“Passion originates and resides in heart not in mind, it needs madness not meditation to grow”
fueled by other emotions and qualities over a period of time and starts growing with various events that keep pushing it further. It is ultimately a concoction of multiple emotions & qualities that breed it and make it grow and become the key enabler of the core purpose for which it exists.
Let’s understand the various constituents of this concoction which is the ultimate driver of success in any context and especially in context of entrepreneurship.

Perseverance

This is the main ingredient as it initially fuels the passion and also provides the drive to act persistently with devotion. It helps you maintain focus on the core purpose and do everything required to achieve it. It helps overcome difficult times and maintain motivation to keep performing and becoming better. It enables you to go all the way and succeed.

Aggressiveness

This becomes your key source for the required energy to persevere. Provides the ability to compete and to keep making an all-out effort to win or succeed.

Self-belief

This becomes the source of much required confidence in your purpose and ability to perform. Drives you to identify and develop/gain the various other abilities required to succeed or fulfil the purpose.

Selflessness

Especially in case of entrepreneurs, passion for a purpose goes beyond the self. The self becomes rather unimportant compared to the vision and the desire to make it happen for a wider set of people, be it your employees, society or your country.

Intelligence (emotional)

This is a key ingredient, which provides the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. Drives you to use gut feelings to guide your decisions. Helps you in controlling your emotions and adapting to changing circumstances. Gives you the ability to inspire, influence, and develop others while managing conflicts.

Optimism

This is an important constituent trait, because you could be passionate but that doesn’t guarantee success. There are always adverse situations, and in such times a passionate person solely depends on this quality to overcome the barriers created by negativity and derive the courage to continue to persevere and with aggression, it triggers you to think differently and innovate (next trait).

Novelty

Makes you think differently and innovate, come out with solutions to difficult problems as you don’t want to leave any stone unturned.
What made the Indian team win the recent cricket world cup? It was not their ability first, it was their sheer shared-passion to win the cup for their country and for someone special (Sachin Tendulkar) who has been their inspiration and guide for all these years. Ability was second to passion, as they developed the required ability as a team and individuals over a period of time driven by the passion to win the cup.
That’s why all successful people when asked, what is that one thing that is required for success? Have always unanimously answered, “Passion”; because if that’s there, rest all falls into place automatically.
